Getting to know the LCD technology
A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a display technology that helps to digitally display readings on a medium such as a computer, television, digital watch, calculator, and so on. In an LCD, liquid crystal film is enclosed between two layers of glass. Liquid crystal is known to change its light modulating properties when exposed to small electric currents. LCD devices could be battery operated or electricity operated. LCD screens have the capability of displaying arbitrary images in a variety of colors. Uses of LCD technology
Just about any application where images need to be displayed can benefit from the use of an LCD screen. Here are a few places where you will likely find an LCD module being used:
Hand-held electronics: LCDs can be found in a myriad of hand-held devices such as mobile phones, tablets, portable computers, and so on. They are also seen in digital wrist watches, and in digital compasses. LCDs can render images in full-color and with impeccable clarity. That’s the reason they are preferred in such devices.
Consumer devices: There are hundreds of small consumer-oriented devices such as calculators, electronic weighing machines, fixed-line phones, audio and video players, MP3 players, and interactive screens of other devices such as microwave ovens. These devices could have a graphic or character LCD screen. A graphic LCD screen displays all types of images, whereas a character LCD screen only displays alphabets, numerals, and characters.
Automotives: Cars, trucks, trains, airplanes, ships make extensive use of LCD and capacitive touch screens. These are used to either read, or input data. These displays form an integral part of flight instruments, and other navigational devices.
Medical devices: From home-use medical devices such as blood glucose level and blood pressure monitoring devices, to more complex medical devices, LCDs are widely used in the medical sector. Such devices could integrate capacitive touch. Alternatively, the basic instruments could feature a character LCD.
Advantages of using LCDs
As compared to several conventional technologies such as the cathode ray tube, the LCD presents several advantages. For instance, it is very compact and can be easily integrated into devices of different sizes. An LCD module can be made in just about any shape or size. This makes it the most versatile display technology. An LCD screen can also display digital data from DVI and HDMI connections directly. An LCD consumes up to 70% less energy as compared to CRT. However, there are also certain disadvantages such as limited viewing angles. In the recent past this problem has been almost resolved with the use of advanced technology.
